New Nordic Food lives on
Nordic cuisine is experiencing a boom these days both in the Nordic countries and beyond. So the New Nordic Food programme will continue. This decision was made by the ministers for agriculture, forestry, fisheries and food at their meeting in Iceland from 2 – 7 July. The new programme will run from 2010-2014 with a budget of DKK 15 million. Communication will be an important aspect of the new programme, in other words, increasing visibility and branding the qualities and opportunities to be found in Nordic cuisine. The programme will also focus on gene resources and ingredients, as well as the health aspects of Nordic cuisine. The final programme will be presented in the autumn. Old plant species for sale
Conservation varieties of plants will now be available for sale in the EU. Conservation varieties are old species of plants which are adapted to local conditions. Apart from conservation considerations these varieties may be of interest to organic farmers or as a starting point for niche production. Up until now it has not been possible to sell conservation varieties, because the existing legislation has made demands that have only been met by modern, high yield varieties. The legislation has now been amended so that a wider range of plant varieties can be sold for the benefit of inhabitants in all EU countries.

Postcards with Nordic flavour
Throughout the summer we will send out postcards based on New Nordic Food from the entire Nordic Region. Read for example about Øland in Sweden that has discovered how to shift tourism towards Nordic produce and local gastronomy. This summer island will be dishing up fish, Øland wheat, vegetables and much more local food. All these many choices will give tourists the excuse to avoid tasting the traditional Øland ‘Kroppkakor’, a dish only a true Ølander could love! Later on in the summer you will be able to read about Finnish school food and personal thoughts about the Norwegian candidate for the New Nordic Food Diploma. http://www.nynordiskmad.org
Fresh fish exhibited
Copenhagen is getting ready for its fifth food fair when Øksnehallen in Vesterbro opens its doors to Eat09. One of the most spectacular events at the fair on 22 and 23 August will be a genuine fish auction of freshly caught, local fish from west Jutland. http://www.eat09.dk
